My subject matter, with all its variations, has always come out of my life in the actual world. The experiences evolve with an effort to see a relation with the subject matter, its treatment, and the unique result that occurs. I have been fascinated by the process of discovery inherent in painting, and the challenge of constantly moving and expanding the different subject matter, each with its own parameters and entered into with a detached and critical observance. One project is a catalyst for the next, without a preconceived formula. I enjoy seeing where the thoughts and execution might lead, and even to seek out the challenge of a subject I would not ordinarily be attracted to. It has been a conscious decision to search for this diversity, and to avoid becoming rigid. If a subject becomes easy or manneristic, then it loses its interest for me, as I strive not to repeat.
